For anyone actually thinking of purchasing... Construction-wise this is a "kit lens." I.e., it has cheap feeling polycarbonate construction (which OTOH makes it light and thus can be viewed as a plus), but optically it is amazingly good. Add the fact that it has a very capable image stabilization system and you can see why I'd call this a "snap it up now" deal.

That is the kit lens I bought for my Rebel XSi. It is a very good lens and I see that it comes with a free filter as well. For those who might consider buying the lens, remember that EF-S lenses will not work with full frame sensor cameras like the 5D.
