Damn damn damn
Ok, so I have RTFM on my D3100
Now I am jacking with the ISO, f-stop, etc.....
I am shooting in RAW (damn you Scott, I am all into Lighroom 3.5 64bit now), and just have been completely consumed.
I have read and read and read....
I finally decided to just put up and shoot!
So now I am starting to play with black and white.
I took one photo and processed it through lightroom and the other through photoshop.
They look COMPLETELY different.
ANd I can't decide which I like better.
They both have qualities I like....and don't like.
So my question posed to you guys.
How the hell do you decide what is good?
Or what is bad?
I mean, I can have 20 versions of the same shot and like 10.

If no one is buying ...
Shoot for yourself...
Are you looking for some set result , or are you just talkng shots and finding results you like???
lots of shots turn out likeable.
You don't need someone telling you what is good or not , unless you are looking for someone to critique your Work/fun....

Hi Rainman,
My advice is to be more selective when shooting.
Think about what you are trying to achieve and try and use only one frame to capture that moment.
I say this because as a professional photographer, I have found that you only tend to use one image of a particular moment. When you start having version A, B, C and D of the same moment, you can start to question which one is best and you can spend hours changing your mind back and forth and editing photos which ultimately languish in your archives.
Being more selective also allows you to spend less time behind the computer and more time behind the camera.
Cheers,
Russell

It's just one picture
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really like it.
So in various developments of said picture.
I can find things in it I like in most of them.
Like contrast.
In one it looks a bit flat in depth but the stark contrast looks really well, stark.
In another, the depth is great, but lacks ooomph.
If no one saw more than one, and I selected one good ovewrall, I am sure none would be the wiser.
But it sure leads to some interesting results looking at them.
Really its less about the photo (cuz I like it), I am really learning what the software does.
But when does tweeking become too much?

There are folks who say "no manipulation" some who say "a little" is okay, others go full bore. IMHO photography is art (with the obvious exceptions of medical photography or any category that requires as close to life-like as possible) so manipulate away until you are happy with the results!

When the photo becomes something that can never be seen with the naked eye.

Blackest black to whitest white is my rule for B & W... but Photography is an art and you have to interpret it to what pleases your eye.

IMO ,,,,, WHENEVER it's done.
"Tweeking" a photograph AFTER the image has been captured by the camera ,,,, is cheating.
I'm not a purist, and nowhere near being a good photographer, but my personal appreciation of a photograph is when WYSIWYG.
Do all you like with light, settings, angle, subject, timing etc etc etc
But to me the TRUE test of a photographER, as opposed to a photograph, is the pleasure that the CAPTURED image gives, rather than the MANIPULATED one.
Photography is the art of CAMERA skills ,,,, NOT COMPUTER skills.
