Canon eos1000d

How do you rate a Canon EOS1000D TWIN LENS KIT with 18-55 & 75-300mm lenses @ $693 AUD

Is it a good camera for a a beginner (first DSLR) or should I be looking elsewhere. I currently have a SX30IS & am not happy with its limitations.

I don't see that model listed on Canon USA website. Do you see a model here similar to the one you are looking at, possibly the Rebel series?
Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : Digital SLR Cameras

I started out with a Rebel XSi and have since upgraded to a 7D/100-400L zoom for nature (primarily bird) photography and very recently a 5D/24-105L zoom for wide angle scenery shots. The old Rebel/18-135 ES zoom will serve as my moto travel camera as its compact size and light weight make it an excellent dSLR to carry in the top trunk of my ST3s.

Instead of purchasing two "kit" zoom lenses, you might look into purchasing a single zoom as an all-purpose "walk-around" lens. Canon makes an 18-135 ES and 18-200 ES zoom which will serve that purpose for their reduced frame sensor camera bodies.

If you are serious about pursuing photography, I don't think you can go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. Both brands have a good choice of cameras and lenses which will allow you to "grow" into the hobby as your available time, budget, and level of interest increase.

Edit: I found the 1000D on Canon's Australia website: http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/For-Yo...-Cameras/1000D

Looking at the MSRP for the camera body alone, the AUD price you gave for the camera body + two kit zoom lenses looks very good. The camera appears similar to my Rebel XSi, which has served as an excellent beginner's camera for me. The more expensive models in Canon's entry level line are geared toward taking HD videos.

Based in my experience with my Rebel XSi, I think you would be very happy with the package you have quoted. Should you decide to upgrade in the future, the 1000D will still come in handy as a second camera. Quite often I have two cameras (one w/a telephoto zoom + one w/a wide angle zoom) hung around my neck or one mounted on a tripod with another hung on my neck.

Check post #85 & 86 of the sunset thread for photos I took with my Rebel XSi/18-135 ES zoom.

As far as the Canon brand, there is a big jump in price between the entry level series (Rebel models in the US), advanced recreational series (7D, 50D, 60D in the US), and full frame sensor professional series (1D, 5D in the US).
US models: Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : Digital SLR Cameras

Fortunately, the entry level series models (Rebel series in the US) take good photos and will still serve you well as a second (or in my case, third) camera should you decide to upgrade your camera body at a later date.

The photos of these rides were all taken with my Rebel XSi, which will reside in the top case of my ST3s for all my moto-trips.

Anyway, you get the picture, both figuratively and literally.

the rebel xs is a very old canon entry level kit camera. and with digital slr cameras anything over 3 years old you want to stay away as technology keeps updating. unless your looking at a high end professional slr from 3 years ago then they are still some good choices. the nikon d60 was a direct competition for the rebel xs. but the rebel xs really has no value it sells for under 300 bucks used and amazon even lists it new for 450 bucks. i cant find a d60 cheaper then 500 bucks just for the body used. i would recomend getting either the new d7000 nikon kit or the 5000 or save a little more and get the d90 kit.

Yea I definitely wouldn't buy a 2nd hand Rebel, especially for that. If you are looking second hand, look for a 30/40D, you will get one for similar money to that 1000D kit. I've not really kept up with all the updates up the new "cheaper" canon slrs but they are great cameras. If you want something to learn on with the view of potentially upgrading if you like it a twin kit and 1000d body / similar Nikon options are a good way to go. Very user friendly, but if you do get right into it they are noticeably lacking when compared with the 50D, 7D, or 5DMII. The quality difference between the entry level canons and the enthusiast canons is a pretty big one. The 30/40/50/60D models are all very good value cameras that are built very solid. I've been shooting on a 40D for about 5 years in some ridicules conditions (I'm not the sort to baby a camera, I'd rather break it chasing an amazing shot than miss it) and it's still 100% perfect.

Lenses are obviously important too, if you are just getting into it having the versatility of a twin kit is good. Allows you learn a lot about important things like composure and how depth of field is effected by focal length and the like, but something like a Tamron 18-300mm is pretty hard to beat as a learner lens. You can do everything with its awesome range, they are reliable, and they take great shots. Anyway, some food for thought...

I bought the Rebel T3i with the 18-135. My first DSLR. I am having a great time using it. I have gotten bit by the bug and already upgraded with 2 new lens, a 50mm-1.4 and a 24-105L. The 18-135 is great but it bugged me how it was not a constant aperture with zoom. The 1.4 is good indoors, but the 1.6 sensor makes it different than I expected. I have a lot to learn, but a good friend is helping out. Its like my bike, very easy to get way more than you need for your level or ability, but you know how it is.
