Pictures With My Camera and New Lens
Some sunset photos with my new (to me) 5D Mark II Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EOS 5D Mark II
and brand new 24-105 f/4L zoom. Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Canon's 28-300 zoom would be much better for composing the shots in the field; but for the extra #1,500 over the price of the 24-105 zoom, I can reach for the 7D/100-400 zoom or crop at home on the computer, which is what I did in several of the shots.

Some of the shots were taken with a circular polarized filter, which produced lens flare and a circle around the sun. I am still trying to come up with a technique which will darken the setting sun without rendering everthing else too dark and eliminate lens flare.

A good way to do that is to use slide in filters.
A graduated filter will do exactly what you are asking for.

Those are nice bill. The ones with the birds in them make it interesting and not just another pretty sunset. Very nice!

I try to include birds, trains, or boats (sometimes all three) in the photos so they don't all start to look alike.

You can do it in photoshop for sure, but the detail in the sky isn't always there because of the overexposure on the original photograph.

I don't do Photoshop. I prefer creating the photo in the field with the camera and lens as opposed to creating it at home with the computer and software.
I have nothing against those who do use Photoshop, it is just a difference in photo-philosophies.

Those might be the ticket. Do you know of a good brand that I can research on the internet?
