How do you jazz up boring lighting?

I took some practice shots a few weeks ago at a cold overcast track day. Do you guys have any tips for making drab light more exciting? They just don't have the pop of a nice sunny day.

For example...

I tried to do the old remove the saturation of everything and add some emphasis to a bright color since the shot is fairly grey anyhow.

It goes without saying that most of my photos during this La Nina winter and spring have been taken with less than ideal lighting conditions. Rather than try to do anything to improve the light, I have worked on taking subdued photos which are almost monochromatic.

Since photography is "writing with light" doing shots like this on a dull day is like trying to do an exciting drawing using a dull pencil.

Your approach as described is the right one. I'd just have risked being a little bolder. I'd use the entire range from black to white as a starter (that's the very thing that makes bright sunlight so exciting, an also so challenging. There go the shadows!) and then I'd risk blowing out the colors. To whit...

Nice shot...try overexposing and adding some contrast...if you're using photoshop you can narrow the levels or steepen the curves.

Try “low key exposures”.
