Exclamation Lens Prices!

Just want to share the observation that lens prices are starting to take off. If you have been considering a lens purchase now might be the time to bite the bullet.

As mentioned in an earlier thread I've been planning to buy a Canon EF-S 10-22mm EF-S but had been put off by the price. Well this week the discount price on all the sites jumped up $200. (List price jumped to $1400!) This morning I did a google search and found a retailer still selling it for the old price and saying they had one in stock. Naturally I jumped. I've got the sale confirmation. Now I only hope they're true to their word!

They certainly have. I own Canon's 28 f/2.8 but have been thinking of letting it go to help fund the 28 f/1.8. The f/2.8 version is a fantastic little lens, but the extra 1.3 stops of light and better USM AF of the 1.8 fits my needs better. New price about a week ago was $484. They are now $499. I'll probably hang on the 2.8 version for a while, or at least until I find a deal on a used 1.8! The used market is a very good place to buy glass BTW.

sorry folks but the yen is exceptionally strong these days, even with the disaster. Canon has to make a profit and they can't do that with the old prices. Specualtors at work? The yen should not be at 81 to the dollar....that is fantasyland.

You probably have a greater understanding of that stuff than I do Mad Dog. All I know is if when a country starts overspending and printing money to cover it its money's buying power drops like a stone. Happened under Carter. Happening again now.

(and it is gonna HURT)

yeah, but the yen started getting stronger before all of the printing did. Folks started looking at what they thought was inherent strength of the yen, though I find that very misplaced.

Talking Walmart? Walmart!

Just a quick follow up... In my earlier post I had mentioned that I'd found a retailer still advertising the lens at the old price, saying that they had one in stock, and that I'd went ahead and ordered it hoping they'd live up to their commitment.

Well as it turns out it was I who canceled that order. Why? Because I found an even better deal somewhere else. Where? Don't drop you teeth... Walmart! Yup! Walmart sells Canon EF lenses and if the price of this lens is typical it is a great prices!

I payed $709 for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. That for a full metal mount, top of the line, non-kit lens.

Amazon's price? $860.

Oh, and FedEx shipping cost all of $1.98.

It's already on its way with a tracking number provided. Who'd have thought?
