For 748 Girl: a Day at the Zoo
Yesterday (1-10) my son and I went to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, where we saw a little of Oz in the Pacific Northwet. It had snowed that morning. I wonder what the wallabies and emus thought of that.

Thank you Bill I think our critters are pretty adaptable because it does snow here too. As for the Emus, they are pretty stupid and as such when I see one when I am on the bike I do get a bit concerned, especially one day when this odd looking shrub in a clearing stood up and started to run towards the road!
In return I can offer you a picture of a Wallaby that came to visit us every day at our cabin in Tasmania last February. He was very cute.

The highlight of the Oz section of the zoo was the aviary. You walk into an open aviary full of cockatiels and parakeets. One of the helpers gave us food sticks. When the birds saw my son and I holdng these, they flew to us, perched on our arms, and began eating the seeds impregnated on the sticks. One bird sat on my head and watched its mates eat.

Our younger members probably don't get your reference, but I saw the first run of Hitchcock's "The Birds." When my parents were living in Santa Rosa, CA in the mid-70's, I visited Bodega and Bodega Bay, where those scenes were filmed.

when I visit the Bodega Bay area I always keep an eye out for a fat bald guy. even knowing that he is not there, you get the feeling that he is just around the corner watching you, JB

I like Zoos and Toronto has a Very good one..
you can go Cross Country skiing thru it in the winter ..
It takes more than a day to see it all...
Some people dislike them for enclosing animals..
Some animals live longer (Better?) in zoos than they would in the wild..
As long as the animals are cared for the BEST that can be expected , I'll say the Zoos are OK...
What child does not remember the day at the zoo along with parents and friends...
Toronto Zoo houses the Heineken Clydesdales (like the Budweiser Horses)
Good stuff..

More photos from a day at the zoo
The new style of zoos which create natural environments for the animals are great. My favorite animals are the cats.
#1-2: lion pair. I was told the rock is heated.
#3: jaguar, the largest cat in the western hemisphere. I doubt it sees snow in the jungles.
#4: ocelot. It was legal to own these when I was a kid and I wanted one for a pet.
#5-6: a pair of rare Sumatran tigers.

The birds are nice to watch as well.
The Steller's sea eagle, a native of Kamchatka and northern Japan, and the penguins felt at home in the cold and snow.
