Welcome to the photo group. Unfortunately, photography can be like motorcycles in that you keep wanting to upgrade.
The T1i will serve you well and the 28-135 is a great walk-around lens. My first dSLR was a Rebel XS1. Even though I upgraded to a 7D/100-400 zoom for bird shots, I keep the Rebel/18-135 zoom with me for landscape and sunset shots so that I don't have to keep swapping lenses.

Ha! THAT's for sure! Exactly!
I have a Canon 30D with:
Canon 17-85 IS
Tokina 12-24 f4
Sigma 18-200
Sigma EF-500 Flash
Last year I also bought a Lumix LX3, and *that* seems to be the camera that I am now doing most of my multi-thousands of shots/yr shooting with (highly addicted). The Lumix is soooo compact! And great images. Obviously not as good as super high end DSLR stuff, but still, really, really, really good!
Right now I'm trying to decide whether or not I should buy a 60D body, or sell the entire Canon package and get a Lumix GH-2 or GF-2 instead.
Decisions, decisions....
Cheers!

If you don't want to upgrade to a dSLR with a full frame sensor, check out Canon's 7D. I am very happy with mine.

It'll be fascinating to see how the various camera trends presently at work work out.
My little Canon ELPH (An SD870 IS) takes absolutely amazing pics. Its wide to short tele lens is sharp, its autofocus accurate and reasonably quick. But still I wanted an SLR. Should I have gone "full frame" or with the newer, smaller, sensors?
I chose the later. What advantage is there to a so-called "full frame" sensor (unless, of course, you already own lenses made for it)? "Full-frame" simply means a frame size matching the sadly now obsolete 35mm standard which itself was determined by the already extant cine film standard.
The so-far open ended question is long-term support. Both Nikon and Canon continue to make their best lenses for the larger sensor cameras. That I think is not so much because those larger sensor models are necessarily superior but because those better lenses are expensive and most likely to be purchased by pros and semi-pros who are already invested in the larger sensor format.
Canon tried to split the decision by making a small sensor camera series with the solidity (and pentaprism) of their larger sensor models, but when they recently updated that model they (to the chagrin of some owners) moved closer to the less professional Rebel series construction.
In the end it'll all come down to lens availability. So far I can find most of what I need in Canon's small sensor EFS line, but should I desire a real fast fixed focal length lens in the "standard" or wide category I'll be out of luck. Why? Simply because fewer and fewer photographers (other than working pros) are buying these.
So here is the contradiction: So far I am totally pleased with my Rebel T2i, but I have yet to take an imprtant picture with it that I could not have taken with my little ELPH. That'll only change when I find the justification to shell out nearly $800 for a super-wide (10-18mm) zoom.

Not exactly...
Their APS C sized sensor EOS line WAS their top of the line digital system for years. It was quite some time later that full frame digital was finally developed.
But everything else you have said is spot on! I can't think of a single phoograph that I have taken with my Lumix that I look at and wish I'd taken with my EOS. And believe me, as a person that has shot with nothing but nikon and canon SLR's his entire life (well there was that one canon range finder and one medium format camera before there were SLR's available), that really surprises me. So I'm thinking if I'm that happy with the LX-3, I'd probably be very very happy with the GH-2.
Btw, I have a 12-24mm and it looks just fantastic with my 30D, no need to upgrade to full frame to use those lenses at all.
Cheers!

I just bought my wife a new camera for her birthday. It will arrive next week. Hope I didn't make a mistake as I am not into photography but researched as much as I could. In retrospect I should have asked here. Anyway this is what I got.
Canon 60D
Tamron's new 18-270 lens
I know she will need more lenses but she can add those later.
What prompted the purchase was a photo tour that we did a couple of weeks ago on Kauai. She has a Leica Dlux 4 that actually takes great pictures but is limited by the lens. It's a great motorcyle camera though.

I guess it counts for me too. Just bought the girlfriend a Nikon D5000 with the Nikkor VR 18-55 lens, for Christmas. She went from a Point-n-Shoot, to a D5000, talk about a learning curve for her! Thankfully I have been there to help out.
Last camera before I sold it....Sony A380 with 18-55 and 75-300. Simple, but it worked.
